"Jubilee" years occur every 25 years within the Catholic Church, and provide a significant opportunity for spiritual renewal. The 2025 Jubilee is a special year of reconciliation, pilgrimage and coming hope. Pope Francis invites us to renew ourselves as "Pilgrims of Hope."
While their frequency has changed throughout Church history, the origin of the Jubilee year is found the Jewish idea of the Sabbatical Year (not growing crops to give the land a period of rest) and the Jubilee Year (celebrated every seventh Sabbatical Year) when debts were forgiven, slaves set free, and land that had been sold returned to its original owner. A Jubilee year is a time for us to re-establish a proper and strong relationship with God, each other, and all of creation.
